Lot 4439 COMBINATION HUNTING SWORD & FLINTLOCK PISTOL BY
KRAUSE OF MITAU (LATVIA). The 23" steel blade has open scroll engraving on left side surrounding hunting scene of dog and stag. Cast brass hilt with oak grip depicts relief hunting scenes which continue onto shell guard of ricasso. A lion's face is on pommel. Right side of blade is fitted with screw barrel flintlock pistol with external main spring. Lock features round bodied serpentine cock, frizzen with internal spring and steel trigger that extends down in front of guard bow. Left side of bronze breech depicts a running bore and bottom right flat is engraved "Krause Mitau" (most probably Christoffer Wilhelm working around 1735). CONDITION: good with considerable cleaning. Blade is silver gray over considerable pitting toward point. Brass shows considerable cleaning and polishing over the years and is presently golden yellow. Grip is refinished; possibly replaced. Pistol is mechanically good. Bore is pitted. Barrel will not screw off. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Nicholas Apergis. (01-27490/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,250.
